American singer and songwriter Noah Kahan’s fourth studio album, The Great Divide, was released on April 24th and features 15 new tracks and two songs, The Great Divide and Porch Light, that were released as singles earlier in 2026. The following day, Kahan released a surprise deluxe edition of the album called The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs, which introduced four new songs.
Kahan’s openness separates him from other popular artists. The album continues the introspective mood of Kahan’s 2022 breakout album Stick Season. He candidly explores his relationships with childhood friends, his family, and romantic partners, especially as his public profile grows. Fans can see a further look into his life after moving from Vermont to Nashville in the documentary Noah Kahan: Out of Body, which was released earlier in April.
Another recurring theme throughout his work is his ties to his home state of Vermont. His depiction of the state and of the greater region of New England speaks to me as someone who has been steeped in the culture of the Northeast. His ability to cultivate a shared cultural identity between New England residents is demonstrated by how quickly his four shows at Fenway Park this summer sold out.
Kahan co-produced The Great Divide with Gabe Simon (who worked with Kahan on Stick Season) and Aaron Dessner (who produced Taylor Swift’s Folklore and Evermore and Gracie Abrams’s The Secret of Us). The album presents impressive musical arrangements, contributing to the storytelling he is famous for. The intricate combination of lyricism, melody, and instrumentation is especially exhibited in the poignant tracks “End of August,” “The Great Divide,” and “Porch Light.”
However, the album suffers from redundancy. Kahan addresses his departure from his hometown and integration into a new life and echelon in almost every track. Although he explores this transition from many different perspectives, it is frustrating to hear the same themes reiterated.
Overall, The Great Divide solidifies Kahan as a culturally important artist; his ability to evoke emotional responses from listeners through thoughtful lyricism and production continues to set him apart from his peers in the increasingly competitive music industry. I recommend not only listening to this album, but also diving into his old albums in order to fully understand the meaning behind every lyric.
