Former New England Patriots head coach and current University of North Carolina (UNC) head coach Bill Belichick was not inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026—a decision that sparked outrage among fans. 2026 was his first year on the ballot, and many people who worked closely with him, including former Patriots player Tom Brady and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, pledged their support for him after his omission was leaked in late January. Although some controversies have tainted his legacy in the National Football League (NFL), his accomplishments are paramount to any preceding coach and have left an imprint on the league.

Belichick learned to play football from his father, who was the head coach of the Naval Academy football team. At Wesleyan, he continued to play football as well as lacrosse and squash. Soon after graduation, he joined the Baltimore Ravens’ coaching team, starting as an assistant head coach and slowly getting promoted. He is most remembered for his time at the Patriots, where he was head coach from 2000 to 2023. During those 24 years, the team won six Super Bowls.

Belichick and the Patriots came to what they called a mutual decision to separate after the 2023 season, which ended in a 3-14 record. Belichick recently finished his inaugural season as the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels. They ended 4-8, landing them 14th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. At UNC, he has reportedly had issues with the university’s social media team, asking them to stop promoting alumni who now play for the Patriots. This is especially relevant now that quarterback Drake Maye, who left UNC in 2023, is an integral part of New England’s offense. UNC continued to promote his highlights after Belichick’s complaint was reported.

Belichick has been followed by one particular controversy commonly referred to as Spygate. In 2007, Belichick and his team were caught recording the New York Jets’ coaches' signals from an illegal spot on the field. Following that discovery, it was revealed that the team had been taping signals since 2000. The incident resulted in a 500,000 dollar fine for the coach and a 250,000 dollar fine for the team. Despite being almost two decades ago, the cheating scandal is a possible reason for Belichick not getting inducted this year. Gary Myers, one of the Hall of Fame voters, said, “My feeling is that the majority of people who voted no on Belichick voted that way because of Spygate.”

Still, many people are upset about his exclusion and maintain that he deserved to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Robert Kraft said, "Whatever perceptions may exist about any personal differences between Bill and me, I strongly believe Bill Belichick's record and body of work speak for themselves.” Tom Brady was also outraged: "He's incredible. There's no coach I'd rather play for. If I'm picking one coach to go out there to win a Super Bowl -- give me one season -- I'm taking Bill Belichick. So that's enough said.”

In the wake of this omission and the leak of information, the format of the Hall of Fame voting is changing. First, the vote will move back to its original in-person format that was made virtual during the COVID-19 Pandemic. It will also be held closer to the awards ceremony to avoid leaks. The voting system itself may also change. There is skepticism that voters are not picking the most deserving candidates, but rather those who they feel may not get another chance to be inducted. This has been raised in the last few years after a change that grouped coaches and contributors with seniors (retired for at least 25 years) in a single voting category. A coach has not been inducted for three years.

In the end, Bill Belichick will be a Hall of Famer. What this incident revealed was more about the NFL and less about his specific accomplishments and controversies. It highlights what needs to be changed moving forward and forces voters and fans to consider what they define as an accomplished and deserving candidate.
