Studying for finals can be stressful for each individual, but it doesn't have to be that way. If there’s one thing worth rethinking, it’s the idea that studying harder always means studying longer. "Studying 'hard' is useless if you're studying the wrong way. Working “smarter” prevents you from wasting hours on effort that doesn't stick.

A common trap that students can fall into is rereading or reviewing their notes. While it is essential to review class notes, rereading them only involves passive learning; that is, do not rely solely on passive review methods, as simply rereading notes often creates a false sense of familiarity rather than genuine understanding. Instead, students should engage in active reconstruction of their notes. This involves rewriting key ideas in your own words, reorganizing information, and expanding on concepts by adding explanations, examples, or connections to other topics. The act of physically or digitally rewriting material forces the brain to process information more deeply, strengthening comprehension and recall. Moreover, this process engages what is often referred to as “muscle memory,” where repeated writing or structuring of information helps reinforce neural pathways, making it easier to retrieve that information under exam conditions.

For example, when considering a student reviewing for biology, the student could construct mind maps. In this approach, one begins by identifying the main topics in general and then draws out subtopics as branches extending from each central idea. This method encourages the learner to organize information hierarchically, making relationships between concepts more visible and easier to understand. 

Another effective strategy is to systematically summarize and analyze common mistakes. Rather than simply completing large quantities of practice problems, students should pay close attention to the errors they make and record them in an organized manner. This may involve keeping a dedicated “error log,” where each mistake is rewritten along with the correct solution and a brief explanation of why the error occurred. Such explanations might include misinterpreting a question, applying an incorrect formula, or overlooking a key detail. Repeatedly practicing corrected versions of these problems reduces the likelihood of repeating the same errors. Over time, this habit not only improves accuracy but also builds greater awareness and confidence, as students become more adept at recognizing and avoiding common pitfalls during exams.

There are a variety of different methods that can help individuals learn more effectively, as each student benefits from different approaches depending on their strengths and learning styles.
